Cold temperatures can have several effects on peripheral nerve tissue, with studies showing that
there is a reduction in nerve transmission speeds, ( Rutkove 2001) . The relationship has been shown
to be nonlinear, with a further increasing reduction in temperature showing exponential slowing of
NCV (nerve conduction velocity).
The reduction in velocity is also mirrored by the reduction in amplitude and duration of impulse.
(Dorfman & Bosley 1994). There was also evidence that there was a change in the recovery status
with slower recovery shown when temperatures are below freezing.
The overall effect of these changes, lead to nerve impulses being blocked specifically the slow pain
fibre motility. This leads to a reduction in direct pain perception. As the skin temperature rises, the
effect of the reduction in pain perception is reversed, therefore the effect is temporary, and any
application of cold (freezing) will need to be reapplied at intervals in order to maintain the analgesic
effect.
Further analgesic effects are shown by the changes in blood flow and oxygenation properties of
nerve tissues. Initially with surface application of freezing temperatures, there is shown to be an
increase in blood flow through subcutaneous tissues, with measured increase in oxygenation of
nerve tissue, followed rapidly by a reduction of blood flow, as the body closes surface vessels to
maintain core body temperature. With reduction in blood flow and oxygenation there is a slowing of
nerve impulse transmission and with this a consequence of pain reduction.
These effects can be shown to be local. With application of cold -specifically freezing temperatures-
having a local analgesic effect on local tissues, with superficial tissues being blocked in nerve
transmission and therefore eliciting superficial analgesia in localised treated area.

CryoGlobes- with steel fluid filled globe at -18 (minus 18) degrees C when applied to the skin, will
have a freezing effect on superficial blood vessels, which reduces blood flow to all tissues in the
treated areas. There is also a direct penetrative effect of reduction on NCV which gives direct
analgesic effects in the superficial area. This will give localised temporary effect, which will need to
be repeated during the application time of any beauty treatments.

Skin effects of CryoGlobes

Freezing temperatures are known to have several effects on the skin. Superficially skin cells are
subject to the exfoliating effect of freezing temperatures with stratum corneum cells being
separated from stratum lucidum, thereby allowing an increase in cellular turnover which has the
effect of improving skin cellular quality, with younger cells coming into the surface tissues.
There is also an increased blood flow through the skin subject to freezing temperatures applied to
the surface. This bring increasing oxygen levels to the treated skin, and therefore this will increase
cellular turnover with cytokine increase.
Further effects include moisture retention effect on intercellular moisture, that cold temperatures
elicit. This gives a volume increase effect which superficially has the effect of reduction of superficial
lines and wrinkles in the skin. CryoGlobes will also, due to the freezing effect also help to allow
penetration of skin additives via skin pores which will held open due to the blood flow effects of the
reduced temperatures.
When combined with other skin treatment specifically Coolifting, then this effect is enhanced and
increased. As part of the process of using Coolifting, use of CryoGlobes will increase blood flow into
the skin being treated when used before Coolift. When used post treatment CryoGlobes will
increase the effect of serum penetration into the deeper tissues of the skin.
